What a pity tonight’s Dublin concert in honour of Barack Obama is not in O’Connell Street.
For that matter it’s also a shame the charismatic US President couldn’t stay a little longer than 24 hours.
No doubt he himself would like an extended tour that would give him more than a brief 60 minutes in his ancestral home of Moneygall.
The whistle-stop nature of his trip will hardly allow him time to down a waiting draught of creamy stout at Ollie’s bar in honour of his forefather Falmouth Kearney.
Such are the demands on the Commander-in-Chief, and security worries about his first foreign jaunt since Osama Bin Laden was killed, that we have to settle for a one-day wonder.
The President is expected to speak for only about 15 minutes when he addresses what is sure to be a large throng on College Green this evening.
But he is likely to pay homage to two of his great heroes – one Irish and the other African American.
The remarkable link between the great 19th century Liberator Daniel O’Connell and anti-slave campaigner Frederick Douglass was referred to by President Obama at the St Patrick’s Day shamrock presentation in the White House this year.
It will not be lost on our VIP visitor that the unlikely pair had a chance meeting down the road where a towering statue of O’Connell looms over the street named in his honour.
By 1845, Douglass had established a precarious degree of freedom, but was forced to flee slave catchers and made a dash to Ireland, settling with a family in Cork.
The striking six-foot-fur future statesman was overwhelmed by the equal status he enjoyed in his exile.
When I go to church, I am met by no upturned nose and scornful lip to tell me, 'We don't allow niggers in here!’” he wrote.
Under bondage as a youth, he heard his master berate the strong anti-slavery stance of O’Connell, who refused to shake hands with anyone who kept slaves.
The pair became great friends after sharing a platform on that fateful day in central Dublin.
And so impressed was Douglas with O’Connell’s ability to “stir the multitude” that he style his own oratory style on that of his fellow speaker.
A measure of well he achieved that in his struggle for freedom was summed up by the master orator who dubbed Douglass “the black O’Connell of the United States”.
And Douglass subsequently wrote at length about the great influence O’Connell’s non-violent approach had on him.

The double act left a deep impression on President Obama who remarked that Douglass “modelled his own struggle for justice on O’Connell’s belief that change could be achieved peacefully through rule of law.
“The two men shared a universal desire for freedom – one that cannot be contained by language or culture or even the span of an ocean,” he added.
Just two weeks ago, Nettie Douglass a great-great-granddaughter of the American social reformer was joined by Anne Quinlan, a great-great-great granddaughter of the Liberator for a wreath-laying ceremony at O’Connell’s monument in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Minister Jimmy Deenihan’s suggested trip to the crypt by President Obama won’t be fitted into the tight schedule, but officials are trying to squeeze in a symbolic stop-off at O’Connell’s statue.

It’s believed the President is keen to pay his respects, but either way he will honour both men in the best way possible.

As an ambitious young politician, Obama modelled his oratorical style on Douglas, who is turn had fashioned his public addresses on O’Connell.

So when the fanfare dies down and Obama steps up to the mic, the streets of inner Dublin will resound once again to the echo of the African American Reformer and the Great Emancipator.

I was unaware when they tried to book me what I was getting involved in and i actually turned them down 3 times before they managed to convince me to take part. These were commisioned for the finalists of the Kellogg's field of dreams competition, the winner which was Kilglass, won a €100.000 for a club makeover. Each club had a celebrity ambassador which included, Rob Kearney, Tracy Piggott, Marty Morrissey and Jaqui Hurley. As usual the deadline was extremely tight, but I managed to get them done in time for the presentation on the Late Late show last Friday. My first IPAD gig

Tonight I'll be doing my first gig on an Ipad. I've spent the last week practicing, messing around with different programmes, pens etc, but now it's showtime!! I'm torn between Artstudio and Sketchbook pro, both have pros and cons. I ordered a couple of pens, the first I got was the pogo, which I hated from the minute it arrived, it's like drawing with a toothpick that has a fluffy pillow on the end, the next to arrive was the Griffin stylus which has a far superior feel, the nib is more compact and refined and is much more responsive than the Pogo. Anyhow I'm nervous in a good way and I'll still have paper with me in case it all goes wrong. Will post pictures shortly.

Lack of posts!!!

Apologies to everyone for the lack of posts recently. Apart from my recent vacation I've been just swamped with private commissions and requests for my wedding stationary and guest boards which have been pretty much been booked up all year. This weekend I'm in the RDS again for Irelands largest and by far the best wedding show. This is a great opportunity to meet potential clients and speak to them in person which is a thousand times more valuable than sending an email.As my business my grows so does my stand and this year I'll have a even bigger one, so you can't/won't miss me.
I also have launched a couple of other ventures which for obvious reasons I'll be keeping quite, at one stage I was the only person doing wedding caricatures in Ireland, now there seems to more and more people everyday, so I'll keep these ideas to myself for the moment. I've also just finished filming a slot for one of Irelands biggest TV shows which has yet to be screened, I'd love to tell you more but I had to sign reams of confidentiality agreements, so that'll have to wait for awhile.

This was meant to a surprise for one of my favourite presenters Tom Dunne, but the good people in Newstalk obviously aren't very good at keeping secrets as I just heard Tom saying how much he liked it on air. If you haven't heard of Tom, he's the ex front man of the band "something happens" of which they're most famous song was parachute. Had a great morning in Today FM. Ray and the gang were as sound, as you'd expect. It looks like I'll be on again in a couple of weeks to draw a female! Here's a couple of pictures from today plus a caricature of Ray that I banged up last night.

Apologies again for the lack of posts, the commissions keep rolling in, leaving very little time for my own personal work. Here's a quick sketch (a filler) of poor aul Bono, who recently turned 50 and next thing you know his back goes out! My sympathies are with him however, having just hit 40 and feeling the creaky bones, I can only imagine what I'll be like in another 10 years, and I'm not hopping around a stage every other night! Best wishes BONO, hope you get better soon.

Today Ireland mourns the sad and tragic loss of probably our greatest ever broadcaster.
Love him or loathe his voice and opinions could be heard across the airwaves every weekday for more than 20 years.
I for one will mourn his loss.

Wedding in Knightsbrook 3/4/10

Brought my new toy to work with me yesterday for the wedding of Graham and Shabana, it's a kodak ki8 HD camcorder. I'm a sucker for gadgets and I thought with my up-coming trip to the states etc I'd treat myself to this. It's no bigger than your average phone and as you can see it also comes in handy for gigs as an alternative to taking photo's. It also made me realize I say "are you ready? and now there you go, allot!
